The Arboretum



The Arboretum at Christ Cathedral, built in 1961, is an architectural landmark designed by world-renowned architect Richard Neutra as a worship space for the Rev. Robert Schuller's Hour of Power Ministries. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange purchased the campus in 2012, and chose Cannon Building to renovate and restore the Arboretum. Work included a voluntary seismic upgrade, installation of under-floor air conditioning, dual glazed windows, new LED lighting, new finishes and fixtures as well as reconfiguration of the worship space.


Cannon Building strategically updated the Arboretum with twenty-first century conveniences and codes while preserving the original architecture of the famed structure. Cannon Building's work on the Arboretum was lauded by ENR Magazine with an Award of Merit. The project has been recognized with several other prestigious awards including:

  • AIA Orange County - Outstanding Service in Protecting Architectural Heritage
  • California Preservation Foundation - Excellence in Preservation
